European Alliance of Clinical Engineering
European Alliance of Clinical Engineering founded at MEDICA 2000 Supranational factors influence the daily work of the clinical engineers: (even though the purchase, operation, maintenance, and management of medical equipment and the instruction of users seem to be a local activities of a hospital)
The European Directives regulate our daily work, international and European standards are the basis of safety, operation, maintenance, and discharge of medical devices, manufacturers and distributors work globally; calls for tenders have to be published Europe-wide in case of big orders, Clinical Engineering service providers offer their service European-wide, hospital chains operate hospitals in different countries, there is a trend in European harmonization of professional education and certification of professionals.
In order to meet these demands more effectively the national associations of clinical engineers want to join forces in a common European group.
Invited by the German Fachverband Biomedizinsche Technik e.V (fbmt), delegates from the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany met on the 24th November 2000 on the occasion of the MEDICA 2000 in Düsseldorf. The
Vereniging van Ziekenhuis Instrumentatietechnici, VZI (Netherlands),
Associazione Italiana Ingegneri Clinici, AIIC (Italy), and
Fachverband Biomedizinische Technik e.V., fbmt (Germany) decided to establish a European Alliance of Clinical Engineering. This - initially unregistered - alliance shall be a network that enables and improves the setting-up of partnerships and cooperations, the contact and exchange of information between the national associations and their members, offer an internet platform for information presentation act as a European body in the European context.
